Exploring the Cloud

cloudLately, the term ‘computing in the cloud’ has been popping up a lot.  Curious to find out what it means, I did some research.  At a basic level, it sounds like many of us are already using applications that leverage data residing in the Cloud.  This is what I found.

What is the Cloud?
The Cloud is still an evolving model, and it is described differently by different sources.  The National Institute of Standards and Technology defines cloud computing  as  “a model for enabling convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g., networks, servers, storage, applications, and services).”

Cloud computing services are typically managed by an IT group.  These professionals populate the Cloud with data and information to feed different consumer applications.  Consumers like you and I access an application that takes information from the Cloud and presents it to us in an accessible and user-friendly format.

Still not sure what the Cloud is.  Can you give me an example?
A cloud service is Microsoft’s platform, Google’s platform, Salesforce.com’s platform, BlueLock, GoGrid, or Amazon.  These are not applications.  These cloud services are receptacles for data.  DevCentral provides more examples of cloud services.

For the average consumer, e-mail, photo sharing, video sharing, online backup, online gaming, social networking, stock trading, etc. are just a few examples of applications that leverage cloud information.  The nice thing about these applications is that users are not tied to a single computer.  As long as you have Internet access, you can access the application from anywhere in the world.

What are the Pros & Cons?

Twitter at NAR2008: What Worked Best for You?

300 updates, 216 followers as I write this: the NAR2008 Twitter feed was a huge success. Next time you chat with Jeff Turner, be sure to thank him, as it was Jeff who set up the very cool group twittering.

I do want to ask, though: if you used Twitter at NAR2008 (and by “used” I mean you posted and didn’t just lurk), what were you more comfortable doing: sending direct messages to nar2008, or using the #nar2008 hashtag? (Some of you overachievers did both.)

For the sake of comparison with the 300 updates on twitter.com/nar2008, there are slightly over 1,000 tweets that are hashtagged with #nar2008.

I had shortcuts for both the NAR2008 feed and for #NAR2008 search results on my iPhone, so it was easy to bounce back and forth between them. But choosing whether to direct message the NAR2008 account or to include #NAR2008 in my tweets was something I did pretty arbitrarily.

How did you tweet at NAR2008? And why did you do it the way that you did?

Green is Good

I spent some time with Marc Gould this week and he reminded me that NAR now has a green designation.  Since I can’t ride a mechanical bull as well as Marc, I thought I would make two contributions to the effort.

First, I wanted to let folks know that REBAC is offering a Green Designation course, taught by Terry Watson, during the Annual meeting in Orlando this year.

I also thought I would pass along some tips related to reducing the energy consumption of computers.  Yes, I know the designation is about housing, but my contribution should be considered tangentially related.  Although each computer uses a relatively small amount of energy, it is amazing how quickly it can add up.    Remember, even “wall wart” (hideous, I know) power supplies use energy if the are plugged into the wall and not attached to a cell phone, laptop or other device.

Maybe we are all Treehuggers to some degree!

REBarCamp is very FooBaz

Greetings from REBarCamp 2008, the first of hopefully many such meetings of open collaboration. CRT is one of the sponsors and glad to be here.  If you’re not familiar with a BarCamp, this wikipedia entry will probably help there.

Matt Lavallee from MLSPIN and I will host a small talk on “RESO, RETS, & Syndication and stuff.” We figure it’s a meaningful piece of content we can bring that few others in the room can provide.  Many of the events of the day seem to around social media information.  (Personally, I’d like to talk more tech, but we all know my geek preferences.)  There are many other planned talks through out the day, and I’ve included some photos of the “topics board.”

As I type this, I’m in a session where Ben Martin is sharing the results of the CREST survey.  When the full survey is published, we’ll cover it in a later blog post.  More later…  (And I’ll fix the orientation on the photos later.  Bandwidth is terrible here, painful to post…)

The march of Progress

Today, Mark and I were walking back from the Hilton after sitting in and listening to the Business Issues Committee meeting here at the midyear meetings. (Hopefully more on that soon from an expert!)

In any case, we passed a bus stop bench and saw a bunch of books sitting on it and we couldn’t resist taking a picture or two.  (Click on the image for a larger version.)  The fact that two of them were HTML books really amused us.

I’m not exactly sure what that collect of books says to me other than “disgruntled web designer.”

Information Free Radicals

I had forgotten that Mark gave this interview at Inman back in Jan. Its a nice little piece of video, so I thought I’d share it.

The Final Countdown!!

frontier.JPG

Now this is exciting! Tonight (Monday) at 2:30am, the Frontier Hotel is being Imploded! Start off with some fireworks, and then right into an amazing implosion. It has been worked on for something like a year in preparation.

A couple of bits of trivia, the Frontier was the second hotel on the strip and the first place that Elvis performed on the strip (maybe even in Vegas?).

This is gonna be a fun night!

Sensory Overload

realtor.GIF Q:Whats the best remedy for your impending sensory overload and the need to share all the knowledge and ideas you are going to come up with while walking through the over 700 exhibitors on the REALTOR Expo TradeShow Floor?

A:Sit back, relax and BLOG about it!

And once again, CRT is your knight in cat-5 cable by hosting the super-swank, ultra-hip, plush and refreshment stocked bloggers lounge at the NAR Expo in Vegas. Yes, last year we were tucked away, a bit tricky to find, but that added to the intrigue and mystique!

So this year, to kick things off right, and let everyone in on the best kept secret during convention, CRT and the REALTOR.org team are hosting a Blogging/Expo kick off event in the Blogger’s Lounge (The Venetian Fourth – Room 4605).

If you are a blogger, join us Monday November 12th at 5:30PM. Meet the REALTOR.org Team, CRT and more importantly, learn the location of the lounge so you can plan your retreat from sensory overload during the rest of the week.

We look forward to meeting you –

Are You a Blogger?

Stop by the Bloggers Lounge in the Forum room at the Omni Shoreham. Show us your blog and we will give you a CRT Blogger Ribbon. Be cool like Todd Tarson of the MOCO Real Estate News blog.
