I was just giving you a hard time, as someone could have easily paraphrase your comment as "it would be wonderful if it was something entirely different."

I just threw in the "from someone else" because the sentence seemed flat without it. It's all about cadence and rhythm.

Oh no Keith, I'm not anti-Apple - I love my iPod and my second computer was an Apple ][+ ... ah, for the old days of 6502 assembly! [I'm going to leave my first computer off this post for use later as a trivia question]. I'm just concerned at this point that the iPhone won't get the job done for the hardcore road warrior. It's quite possible that Apple will come out with a version at some point that I am more confident will meet such needs.

So, Matt, you're saying if it was a completely different device made by someone else it'd be perfect? :)

If it synched with Exchange, ran Firefox, and worked with a provider other than AT&T, and had a battery that lasted longer than 300-400 charges (just over a year for heavy use?) and could be replaced reasonably inexpensively - I'd consider it.

I've also seen mixed battery life reviews and am still not sure - even if all the above items were addressed - that the iPhone would work for me. I'd like to be able to speak for an hour or two in the morning, surf and check email for two hours in the airport, watch a vid for 2 hours on a plane ride, get my voicemail when I get back on the ground, read and send email on the way to my client site and still have confidence that I could take some phone calls of significant length through the dinner hour before getting back to a hotel to plug in.

Though I have plenty of doubts about its viability, I'm still hopeful that projects like Openmoko (http://www.openmoko.org/) get a foothold and change the current hardware/software/provider model.

Well, it's going to be very interesting now that Microsoft has formidable competition.

Until the iPhone can run a Slingplayer (like Windows Mobile), it's going to remain interesting to watch, instead of a must have.

I agree with you on some points of the iPhone. Until I can sync OTA with Exchange it's no good for me. I really need syncing the calendar, contacts, and tasks. Every since I went cradle-less with Exchange and windows mobile 6.0 there is no going back.
