I had the pleasure of having lunch with Chris McKeever today. The range of topics was phenomenal (as always). He mentioned that when he was at the Inman Conference this year, he regretted missing the talk by Craig Newmark of Craig’s List fame.
If you are interested in improving your lead generation potential, concepts like Craig’s List are important to study. You will first notice the overall raw appearance of the site. This is an example of the minimalism advocated by Edward Tufte. This approach is preferred by “Generation X” audiences. You might think that lots of color and polish would gain internet community, but you are wrong.
If you haven’t followed the links so far, you will see that Craig’s list has real estate sections. The reports from the field are that these postings do produce bona fide leads. Probably better than the contact quality you see today from websites. Frequent visitors to Craig’s List are there for more than just Real Estate. Part of being effective on the web is being where the consumer is. Craig’s List, with roots in San Francisco, is a nationwide (heck, it is even international) mainstay on the internet.
I’m a big believer in studying concepts before judging them.
